When curator André Magnin organized an exhibition of Malick Sidibé’s works at Paris’s Fondation Cartier in 1995, it was the photographer’s first solo show outside of his native Mali. In the years that followed, Sidibé, nicknamed “the Eye of Bamako” for his particular insight into the life of the Malian capital, gained global recognition as a master photographer. He had almost 40 solo exhibitions around the world, won the 2003 Hasselblad Award and in 2007 became the first African and first photographer to receive the Golden Lion lifetime achievement award at the Venice Biennale.
