A confession: I still miss “Mad Men. ” Ever since we lost Don Draper and his band of endearingly megalomaniacal ad men, the small screen has just looked a lot shabbier. Today, unlike “Mad Men,” which sparked a style revolution and minted (far too many) fedora-and-grey-flannel-clad clones, there is no consensus on the “most stylish show” on television. Thanks to a la carte streaming, you’d be hard-pressed to find five people who agree on the year’s best show, period. Yet, there have been bright spots, the occasional flash that made me say to my imaginary roommate, “Hey, that looks pretty great!” And so, in the spirit of this splintered TV landscape, I’ve decided to single out TV’s five most memorable outfits (yes, just outfits) in 2017. Agree? Disagree? Send me an email and while you’re at it, include your Netflix password, because that subscription price has ticked up recently.
Dougie Jones’s Lime-Green Sport Coat
Okay, for the “Twin Peaks”-illiterate, a quick summary: Agent Dale Cooper (Kyle Maclachlan) falls into some kind of metaphysical, time-space-continuum split and becomes Dougie Jones, a nearly mute clone with an obsessive love for coffee. And how did David Lynch choose to dress his most oddball character yet? Why with a saggy sport coat the color of a wayward muppet!
FBI Agent Holden Ford’s Impossibly Wrinkle-Free Dress Shirts
“Mindhunter”
In a November interview on “The Watch,” a pop-culture podcast, Jonathan Groff, who plays Agent Ford, explained that the series’s director, David Fincher, made him wear a “sock garter,” which hooked the bottom of his dress shirt to his hosiery. I can’t imagine Mr. Groff was comfortable, but, my god, was his shirt as flat as a slab of marble!

Prince Philip’s Pearly White Shorts Suit
I’m glad I waited until the actual new year to compile this list. Had I done so a month earlier, I wouldn’t yet have gotten to Prince Phillip’s incredible seafaring short suit from season two of “The Crown.” Pristine white socks, pristine white shorts, pristine white jacket: I like to imagine that the Prince (Matt Smith) had servants feeding him each tiny little forkful of food to keep that suit shining. Now, as for the Prince’s castaway beard, that would take a whole other column, so moving right along….

Roy Goode’s Dust-Faded Shirts
“Godless”
Speaking of late-breaking additions, Netflix’s 1880s Western-epic “Godless” was a Thanksgiving weekend binge-watch for me. Yes, the tale of a town of widows who defend themselves against a deranged rogue (played remarkably, and surprisingly, by Jeff Daniels) is a treat, but I find myself coveting the popover shirts with a perfect decades-in-the-desert fade that his rival Roy Goode (Jack O’Connell) wore. I do hope the designers at Ralph Lauren’s unabashedly heritage Americana-obsessed label, RRL, were watching this one.

Pius XIII’s Flat Brim Hat
What to say of “The Young Pope”? HBO’s limited series was at once a transporting feast for the eyes, a frustrating story of a cruel young man, and an unexpectedly uplifting piece of television. It was a wild ride, but along the way, we sure got to see one great hat. Maybe only Jude Law could pull off a flying-saucer flat brim, but pull it off he did.

•The just-corny-enough, matching cherry-red bombers on “The Get Down”
•The generally marvelous 1950s wardrobe worn by Midge Maisel (Rachel Brosnahan) on “The Marvelous Ms. Maisel”
