Inspiration came easy when designing the living room of this modern Austin, Texas, home. “These clients are very well traveled and have lived all over the world,” says Laura Britt, an interior designer who founded her own firm in 2001.
The couple, both 67, traveled extensively due to the husband’s job as a business executive.

“Some of the elements in this room are true artifacts,” Ms. Britt says, including the gold Buddha the couple acquired in Phuket, Thailand. The custom-designed entertainment center, which cuts through a stone fireplace, holds additional items from the owner’s collection, including the husband-and-wife sculptures from Surabaya, Indonesia.
Now empty-nesters, the couple contacted Ms. Britt in 2012 and asked for interiors that are welcoming to children and grandchildren. Ms. Britt says the living-room project took about six months from design to installation and cost about $55,000 overall.
