OUR DESIGN ASSESSMENT When we first saw this image of a kitchen, it seemed clear that designers John Loecke and Jason Oliver Nixon of Madcap Cottage had gone for a homey mid-20th-century feel. It could be the room in which Auntie Em worriedly washed dishes as she waited for Dorothy’s return. The retro country touches—a farmhouse sink, a tongue-and-groove ceiling, rustic icebox latches and bin pulls—had us convinced the kitchen was nestled in a lovely rural Midwest house.
