Let’s be blunt: a White House ceremony for a championship sports team is a pretty banal affair. The merry team arrives, often months after victory, there’s a congratulatory grip n’ grin with the president, perhaps a few clunky jokes—President Obama liked to repeat a gag about wishing he was meeting instead with one of his hometown Chicago teams—and then the owner or coach presents the POTUS with a personalized jersey he almost surely will never wear for the rest of his life, unless he becomes a bartender at a Buffalo Wild Wings….
